The visual concept of the music video of Lady GaGa with her number one Bad Romance only shows her being auctioned to the highest bidder, each of the bids people are representations of the labels. Therefore, it is being auctioned to the record company that wants to sign with her label, which is viewed by GaGa undressing in front of these people and seems to be sold as a sex slave. This idea is extended when GaGa charms of men in a “buy” her, and then proceeds to have sex with the highest bidder.
Thus, the whole video can be interpreted as a metaphor for the music industry and how they handle their artists. The video shows each step GaGa itself has to go through to become a famous star. This includes business agreements, handling and the idea of the dark forces. So while the song Bad Romance initially by the mere thought of someone to love them and everything about the good and bad, it is also the “Bad Romance” and the relationship of artists with the music industry.
However, although the video is pretty simple this “narrative” of other elements and symbols are included throughout the video. References to the devil and against Christianity, are quite common and obvious. The first reference to this is the use of the cross and the word “monster” written underneath, the other is the image of the cross in underwear GaGa, and finally, the phallic symbol of the triangle is drawn during a scene visually dance. Along with this, there are plenty of references to the sun, including a gold dress worn by GaGa, the golden sunlight streaming into the room and the orbital equipment worn near the end of the video.
Therefore, the video is full of meaning and symbolic references to different things. All this points to the fact that the video at the same time showing the bad side and dark relationships also represents the dark forces in the industry.
